Kingfisher Backs IPAF's "Clunk Click" Campaign
Way back in July 2005, we reported that IPAF had published a technical guidance note, H1, "Safety Harnesses in Mobile Elevating Work Platforms", which strongly recommended all users of boom type access platforms to wear a full body harness with an adjustable restraint lanyard (used to provide work restraint and adjusted to be as short as possible).
More recently, the Powered Access Interest Group (PAIG) have called on the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), manufacturers, hire companies and Main Contractors to support their campaign to save lives through preventing ejection of users from boom platform baskets. They are calling for all users of boom type access platforms to wear a full body harness with a short restraint lanyard attached to a suitable anchor point.
Clunk Click Campaign Launched
Now IPAF have launched a new safety campaign called Clunk Click, which reinforces this ongoing message of fall prevention.
"We have enough stickers printed for every boom in the UK," said IPAF managing director Tim Whiteman. "It's time for action. If you have got a boom type platform, make sure you get a sticker and put it on the relevant machine. It could save a life."
MEWP Operator's Safety Kit
At Kingfisher we are convinced of the undeniable good sense of using a full body harness and an adjustable restraint lanyard, properly attached and correctly adjusted when operating boom-type platforms.
Of course, just thinking it's a good idea won't actually achieve much - and, like IPAF, we actually want to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
So, as from January 2007, everyone attending a Kingfisher IPAF Operator or a Kingfisher IPAF Harness course will receive their own Harness and Lanyard as part of the MEWP Operator's Safety Kit now supplied as standard on these courses.
This way we know that all of our customers have the correct type and quality of harness/lanyard to give them high levels of protection against being ejected vertically from boom type MEWPs.
The MEWP Operator's Safety Kit briefly comprises:
- Harness & Lanyard set (with protective case)
- Operators Safety Helmet (with chin strap)
- Operators Safety Glasses (with neck strap and pouch)
- High Visibility Waistcoat
